you got me doughnut crazy

If you could smell my house right now, I guarantee you would come back to this blog again and again.  And if you knew how much I lurrve doughnuts... perhaps you remember that Veto and I had a doughnut tower at our wedding... then it will come as no surprise that I just had to attempt making my own Krispy Kreme style doughnuts.  I found a copycat recipe here, printed it out, and off to the kitchen I went.  The dough was easily put together in the stand mixer in about ten minutes.

After I let it rise for an hour... during which time I watched the end to a killer baseball game, I returned to the kitchen to cut the doughnuts.  This also took only about ten minutes:

I then covered those bad boys with a tea towel to rise again and repaired to Wal Mart to get a new SD card for my camera.  I don't know what's wrong - I've pooched three of them since getting the Mac.  Can you say damned near frantic?

Loopy and I set about deep frying our doughnuts according to recipe directions.  Whoops!  It looks like 350 degrees is too hot for frying.  The first batch is now also pooched.  Still edible, but too dark for our liking.  Let's cool the oil off to say, 325 degrees.

Much better!  Perfect, in fact.  Fried on each side for one minute... golden, not brown.

If you don't make this doughnut recipe, do yourself a solid and just make the glaze sometime.  I could have eaten the glaze, sans doughnut.  It was that good.  Loopy whipped it up according to the recipe.

One. Perfect. Doughnut.

For you.

Oh, and friends: I am only about twenty votes behind the leader in the Iron Cupcake: Earth competition.  I'd hate to lose with only one day left to vote so if you haven't cast your vote for me yet, please click here.  Thanks a million!  If I win I am going to give away some of the prizes to my readers!

Thanks gals... so how were they Saucy?? I'm a little afraid of the whole deep fryer thing... I usually just throw in some fries and walk away. Though I think trying the deep fried Mars Bars would be delish!

Don't do it! Veto and I had a deep fried Mars bar somewhere in the States... where was that? Anyway, it was really disgusting. Maybe we had a bad one. Someone out there, please advise! Is there such a thing as a good fried Mars bar?

I feel a little gross just thinking about it again.

Those look amazing!!!!

Great job!!!

Deep Fired Mars Bars do indeed sound really gross and I've never been tempted to try one. But I would love to try one of your doughnuts!
We used to drive to Southend on Sea to get fresh made doughnuts from the pier!

I've been craving Krispy Kreme doughnuts now since you first tweeted (?) about them. I've tried just using refrigerator biscuits and frying-that glaze would be good on my cheating version. Or I could try the real version. Either way-yum!

I had the deep fried Mars Bar down by the river for taste of Saskatchewan and it was good but not as good as deep fried cheesecake!!

I just completed 48 super kid cupcakes for our baton/dance photo session... tomorrow I will pile on the icing and Dj will be in charge of the sprinkle shaker!

Yummy! They look awesome.

I have always wanted to try a deep fried Mars bar.

When I was in N. Ireland for a few months, there was a chip shop up the street and they sold them. I don't know why I didn't try them then.

Maybe it was a good thing I didn't.

MJ said...

K is wondering why you didn't use chocolate icing on the donut. I'm wondering whether I gain calories from virtual doughnuts. Could you post something low fat or low cal, please?!

Saucy said...

Whaaaa ;( I don't have an actual deep fryer, but I did blog about wanting one for Christmas last year. I know deep frying is bad for you but I do it about twice a month so I could really use that T-Fal one that cleans your oil for you. I do it the wasteful way, in a heavy bottomed pot and then I have to throw the oil out, especially after chicken fingers. It is pretty clean after doing the doughnuts! Tonight I think I will fry some potato chips in that same oil and nobody will notice and THEN I will get rid of it.

Girls! I was six votes ahead but now I am one vote behind in Iron Cupcake:Earth! Vote for me if you haven't voted already!

My big competition is the cupcake right below mine (The Busty Baker) and the three at the bottom of the list (the Contessa)....

Voting ends on Monday at noon! Tell your friends.

That is one thing I can make. I like to do them in the summer outside so that I don't get the heavy grease smell in the house. My hubby loves cake doughnuts. They are so easy. It one of the few things that I don't mess up. I make killer pie crust too. That is about my whole repertoire though.

Saucy said...

I finally mastered pie crust this past year. The doughnuts were just a lark. I don't know how soon I will try them again but actually I liked the smell in my house, it was just like a Krispy Kreme in here!

Some readers are worried that perhaps I am trying to kill Veto with my cooking. On that note, I will refrain from deep frying the Mars Bars and the Snickers. Note taken.

Gosh girl - how do you keep your slim figure with all the yummy treats in your kitchen? There is nothing like the smell of fresh doughnuts. Yum

These look amaaaazingly yummy and it makes me wonder if there is anything that you can't cook!? Tell us!

Saucy said...

Hmmm... good question. I just really like cooking and trying new things, but quite honestly you can't knock it out of the park every time.

Just ask Veto about last night's casserole. I mucked up my usual nice recipe somehow PLUS I overcooked it. To fess up, I was on the computer looking at blogs. *Sigh*.

This is exactly what I need today--it's super-rainy, and a naptime treat is definitely in order. We made funnel cakes a few weeks ago (it's on my blog) with such success, I'm over my deep-frying fears. Thanks!

First of all, I love that you spell "doughnut" correctly. I am kind of a grammar nerd and I cringe whenever I see a recipe for "donuts".

Second of all, your doughnuts look scrumptious, and perfect. Yum-yum!

Tomorrow is National Doughnut Day! Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts are giving away free doughnuts! I think I may just celebrate on my own and make some myself!

i'm so cursing you right now. If I make this, I'm sure to eat the entire batch. :)

Mmmmm ... that looks tasty. And I do love me some doughnuts. Good job on adjusting the temperature. Donuts should NOT be crunchy!

Mam, First I would like to say that your Doughnuts look fantasic. I am a U.S. Service Member deployed at this present time, cooking is my passion, however I have been brining down the Steal Rain for the last 15 years. I would like to be able to give something to the boys while we are here, they already love my steaks, ribs, bbq chicken....(etc).
I do bake bread and cinnamon rolls when we are not on Combat Patrols, just giving the boy's a little taste of home. I was unable to get your Doughnut recipe on this site for some unknown reason. We would certainly appreciate your recipe, and I would love to show off to the boy's the beautiful master pieces that are on your blog. My e-mail address is (cameron.shoemaker@us.army.mil). In advance, Thankyou.
