Today I put some posters up around the school to build anticipation for the cupcake sale we will be having at the upcoming community family dance. It's amazing what you can do with some poster board, a jumbo Sharpie marker and some watercolours. I did the lettering and Loopy drew the cupcakes.
Being a control freak, I asked the parents to bake cupcakes using the instructions on my tutorial and to make my never-fail frosting recipe, but not to decorate the cupcakes themselves, to bring the cakes and frosting to the school kitchen on the day of the dance and I will pipe on the icing. Pepper and The Fan and some of the other mothers will be on hand to do the sprinkling. It will be a regular assembly line.
That's how we used to do things back at the bakery when I worked on the finishing line one year when I was a student. Except when I had to decorate birthday cake I often left the "h" out of the word birthday and well, you can't sell a cake that says "Happy Birtday Irving." It was somewhat problematic as one can imagine.
On the bright side, I ate a lot of sheet cake that year.
On the down side, I gained a lot of weight that year. I learned the hard way: you can bake it, you can decorate it. You just shouldn't eat much of it.
At least this time there won't be any writing involved, just cupcake embellishing. We will be offering chocolate, vanilla, mocha, Oreo, carrot, red velvet, lemon, strawberry and a few secret super surprise offerings from Loopy. And then you won't have to hear about cupcakes from me again for a long while.
Unless of course Loopy comes up with a new combo she'd like to try. I'm pushing for a "salted caramel chocolate" recipe... anyone?
