baby, it's cold outside

Buddy Budderson and I lurrve the song Baby It's Cold Outside. In his words, it is "the sweetest" song ever. It's been recorded so many times, we've decided to make it our mission this year to collect as many versions of it as we can... will you help us?

Of course, being JT's biggest fan/stalker/cupcake baker I have his version, sung with Natalie Cole.

Buddy's favourite version is from the film Elf, featuring Leon Redbone and Zoey Deschanel. Buddy is sweet on Zoey.

It all started when we picked up this version by Ray Charles and Betty Carter at Starbucks in September... we listened to the song all the way home.

I really must find this obscure version by Liz Phair and Wheat... indie Christmas tunes! Very cool.

Holly Cole and Barenaked Ladies frontman Ed Robertson had a version a few years back... must find it.

As a closet Fanilow, I need to find the Barry + KT Oslin version.

One of my faves for the last few years has been the Rod Stewart/Dolly Parton rendition. How could you not love Rod with Dolly? Did Dolly and Kenny ever record this song?
Reader, help us... if you know of a version of this song, please let me know so I can look for it. We want to collect as many of them as possible! It's my Christmas mission with Buddy Budderson for 2008.

There is a list here of all who have recorded it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby,_It's_Cold_Outside

I remember seeing the Jessica Simpson/Nick Lachey Christmas special one year and they sang it.

I also think Vanessa Williams recorded it but I don't see her on the list.

Yep - Vanessa Williams on her Star Bright CD (she sings it with Bobby Caldwell)

All I could hear while reading this post was a Welsh voice fresh from the valleys of welsh wales....Tom Jones & Carys Matthews! Here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li-m1T81xGw
love Carys' voice - bloody freezing ain't it? (is what she say's to Tom at the end)

But we also love the Elf version.

Brian Setzer does it on one of his Christmas albums.

I'm pretty sure Jessica Simpson recorded it with Nic a few years ago on her show - it was hot hot hot.

I love the version with Dean Martin. Anyone from the Ratpack can sing for me anyday.

That is my hubby's favorite Christmas song. We love the one that Dean Martin did with Doris Day. I am a HUGE Dean Martin fan :) Also, I have heard a version that Regis Philbin did with his wife, Joy Philbin (no joke).

I'm sentimental to the Dean Martin and Doris Day version! Love it! Great post by the way, inspires me to do one like it too with this chilly weather coming!

Ok, let's try that again, shall we? Apparently it's margaret whiting and johnny mercer, not bing. Pffft. If you type in baby its cold outside on youtube, a zillion versions come up. Including nick and jessica, bo bice and one with ella fitzgerald. (too damn lazy for capital letters this morning, sorry.)

I had no idea there were so many versions. My kids love the Elf version... I like to think I sing it pretty good... in the shower, alone...

When I hear the song it always takes me back to either Dean Martin or Bing Crosby.

I LOVE the Rod and Dolly version!

I love Holly Cole's version. I saw her in the coolest (&only) concert I've attended here in MH.

Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald did a version, as did Harry Connick Jr. & Lee Ann Womack.

Oh, and I love the Elf version. That's one of my favourite Christmas movies now.

Sorry for so many comments...but I really think you should consider the version I just found by Regis Philbins on itunes.

Go to www.playlist.com and type in "Baby its cold outside" (without the apostrophe in the word its). There are quite a few versions on there.

I agree with Buddy - I like the Elf version with Zooey Deschanel, BUT....Theresa Sokyrka and Matt Dusk have a FABulous rendition as well.

Saucy said...

Awesome suggestions... keep 'em coming, I want to track ALL of them down. Especially Regis! I flippin' lurrve Regis!

Lenore said...

As I am listening to Matt Dusk's voice I'm thinking there is noooo way Michael Buble hasn't done his own version...so sure enough, he has, but...it's with Anne Murray. I took a listen and while Michael's voice is absolutely yummy....Anne is bringing the cold inside.

There are 150 versions of it on iTunes...including Regis!

Dean Martin and Doris Day--my favorite. There's a new one with Martina McBride, but I think she hacks it up. :(

Harry Connick Jr. and Leanne Womack (?) do one.

Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney--love that one!

Lou Rawles does one with someone too. I LOVE his voice!

OH...and Vanessa William did one with Al...something or other. :)

Looks like a lot of other people have already named some of these. The other ones that I know of, you already listed.

Can you tell this is one of my favorite songs too??? Great minds think alike I guess! :)

I'm broken hearted over your tree!!

That's my favorite Christmas song ever!

I love this song, too. I have to say that my hands down favorite version is the one by Margaret Whiting and Johnny Mercer. They have this great delivery and you can really picture it all in your head. I lurve it! :)

Kristi said...

We love this song...it's mine and Sweet P's favorite! I actually texted this to him on Friday night because it really was cold outside! :)

Oh, I'm very partial to the Bing Crosby version...I'm pretty traditional that way, though I must admit that Zoey does a fabulous job, too!

Have fun with this one!

:) Kristi

I have the weirdest half-memory of this song on an Osmond Family Christmas special from when i was a kid. Marie was singing the Mouse part, but i can't remember which brother was singing the Wolf part; though, wouldn't it be creepy to have a brother/sister duet of that song?
This version isn't on the Wiki list, but it would be cool to find it somewhere.

didn't harry connick jr. sing it on that last christmas album of his? he also has a groovy version of that new year's eve song.

You can at least listen to the Liz Phair / Wheat version on KCRW's streaming archives.

Try this link:

They play the song a little past 32 minutes into the show. :)

Why is the Ricardo Montalbán and Esther Williams version not listed here? Its available on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74jlP0u2NNk
and its the earliest known recording of this song.

Thanks for the link to kcrw; I was able to make a good mp3 from the stream.

I am literally aching for a version with Harry Connick Jr. and Zooey Deschanel. I'm never quite satisfied with the pairings on this song... (for example, the Elf Zooey version creeps me out a little 'cause I can't make a romantic match between her and the older fellow) but I think Zooey and Harry would be lovely together. In fact, I could totally see them together in a romantic old-school Holiday Inn type movie. Will someone please make this happen for me???

Who doesn't love Zooey Deschanel? I happen to ADORE Michael Buble and his version with Anne Murray. His voice is to die for.

There is a wonderful version where the roles are reversed - the girl is doing the pleading and the man has a real English accent and is desperate to leave. Unfortunately I can't remember who did it.
