penny madness

Are you wondering what I found today for just a penny?

First, a recipe...

What shall we do with this batch of Loopy's famous chocolate chip cookies? They always bake up perfectly. Do you want the recipe?

1 cup butter

1/2 cup white sugar

1 and 1/2 cups brown sugar

2 eggs

2 and 1/2 tsp vanilla

1 and 1/2 cups flour

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1 generous tablespoon of the secret ingredient
(add when Loopy isn't looking)

1 cup milk chocolate chips

Roll into 1" balls and bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes.

Today after they cooled, we sandwiched them with vanilla ice cream and sprinkles.

Veto grudgingly went with me to one of my favourite haunts in town... Liquidation World. He hates that place. He thinks it smells. I think it smells like a bargain. Today it smelled like one cent faux flower stems... just in time to stuff my flower boxes for fall.

Friends, I stuffed these flower boxes for 96 cents. Even Veto approved of Liquidation World today.

The purple flowers at the back... they look a little dead and dried... I think that's why they were only a penny. But for a fall flower box, it's good to look a little dried out, don't you agree? This was the look I was going for. Did I get there? I think so. For a dollar.

Inside the porch, I straightened things out. The contractor comes next week to blow a hole in the kitchen to put in the new French doors... I can move the new fridge and stove inside the house and out of the porch! In the meantime, I just want to say that I put stones in my boot trays long before Martha sent that email out...

More bargains... that little obelisk I got for 75% off at my florist a while back. The potted mums I bought a couple of years ago after Thanksgiving for two dollars each at Wal Mart. That little sign is from the dollar store... another place Veto hates. Where do you go for a good bargain, my friend?

You are quite the shopper (and the hidden baking secret is great too)!

I will admit that it took me years to get used to the smell of some of those places. Now, they smell like bargains to me too. This last year, my husband has finally joined me on my trips to my own bargain heaven stores... He is starting to see the benefit of how I shope for this family. Yippee!

The secret ingredient is groovy. It goes in everything around here - sauces, meatloaf, baked goods, milkshakes and smoothies... it's a fantastic "mommie trick".

Top of the mornin' to ye! We arrived in beautiful Belfast - we just polished off an Irish breakfast complete with eggs, bangers & 'blood puddin'!
I was upset when my Little Loopy cried so much as we left but Grandpa was in tears as soon as she was out of sight. I can see that you kissed her better and made those cookies - saucy, you know just what to do in every situation! The flower boxes are smashing! xoxo the fan

What great curb appeal. I can smell autumn there. Okay, one of my best friends, Carmen, is coming to visit me from Tucson today. The best bargain spot in the entire state of Arizona is Nordstrom's Last Chance. We are going there this afternoon. Everything that needs to be moved out of Nordstrom's Rack stores and all of the returns from Nordstrom's customers go there. It's a blast.

Who doesn't love a good bargain. Too bad Veto doesn't like the dollar store : i just finished my Halloween shopping for both home and work at Dollar Tree using less that $25. When in doubt the Salvation Army is my best friend - last week i found a cashmere sweater set in my favorite color for $8!

First of all, yum! Maybe I'll make a batch of cc cookies. Your window boxes look wonderful! I did a little shopping at the local TN arts and crafts show this morning and will soon open up my goodies for a photo shoot. You always inspire me to do something. Maybe I'll dig up my half dead window boxes and put a little fresh something in there. Enjoy your weekend!

I love Nordstrom Rack... but I've never been to the Last Chance.

Last Call in Toronto is the same type of thing... for Holt Renfrew, my very favourite department store in Canada. If you're ever in TO, it's worth the little drive to Steele Ave. I got an Armani dress there for $140.00 and it is so absolutely gorgeous and it fits like a dream! It was made for me, I think.

The boot trays are from... Home Depot! They were about eight dollars each as I recall. I think I need two more for the other side of the door.

I have the same boot trays. I got mine from Zellers. I love the rock idea!

I go to this blog: http://smartcanucks.ca/ for my best deals. It is Canadian and great.

Having been a floral designer and someone that has a pension toward all things natural, I must admit that I have a reeeal problem when people putting silk flowers (especially poor quality flowers) outside their home, in window boxes, etc. But then there is Saucy ... You blow mw away, girl... I must admit, the front of your house and entryway look spectacular, and you have won me over with the flowers at such a bargain! But then again, if anyone could make them look fantastic it would have to be you (you hear THAT Martha?)!

Dear Saucy,
I shop every place...the best spots are Thrift shops. I also love wildcrafting...no pennies needed.
Boot trays are on my list! I NEED one.
Thanks for always being so inspiring.

Ah, you smell bargains, Veto smells bad things. That's kind of funny! But the results of your pennies are quite lovely. I find good bargains at the thrift store, but I don't head there often enough.
