How about these dazzling "goldfish bowl" suckers that The Fan and I whipped up for a family birthday party this weekend? I admit, I saw them on someone's clever blog... and now, for the life of me, I can't find the link to send that clever someone the credit that they're due. If it was you dear reader, comment accordingly and everyone can come over for a visit.
The Fan and I have been making lollipops for years, using Aunty Den's recipe. Here it is:
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup white corn syrup
1/4 cup water
Heat over low/medium heat in a heavy saucepan. Don't stir! Bring to a boil for approximately 8 min (290 degrees - soft crack stage on candy thermometer). Remove from heat, add one drop food colour and one or two drops of natural flavour (I use orange oil). Drop from spoon onto tinfoil, shiny side up. Work the lolly stick into the mixture before it hardens too much.
Nothing smells quite as delicious in a house as the smell of cooked sugar... sort of a carnival throw-back, the smell of cotton candy and candy apples... I love it.
