that's going to leave a mark

Guess what happened at the Blue Jays game today? Loopy and I were settled in nicely, with hotdogs, ice cream, popcorn, soda, candy apples and nachos. No word of a lie. We don't mess around at the ballpark. We were sitting not too far back on the third base line, with Dear Veto at our side.

I explained to Loopy that in seats this close, you have to pay close attention to the ball when it is in play because a stray foul ball could really be dangerous. The ladies sitting behind us agreed and we all decided that we'd like the balls to continue flying into the upper deck, away from our teeth, our eyes and our noses.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Loopy asked how fast the ball was traveling. I showed her the radar gun and the speed display. The ball was averaging anywhere between 85 and 95 mph and just when she asked me what I thought the record was for the speed of a baseball...

The ball came right off the end of the bat, with a nasty curve and headed straight for us! My first instinct was to push Loopy away, and I did. She covered her face, Veto tried to deter the stray ball, but it was too late at that speed. It landed squarely on my ribcage.

Veto asked me if I was alright, everyone around us seemed stunned for a minute (not the least of whom I) and the ushers came running to our seats. I looked Veto squarely in the eye and said, "I'm fine. I think we're on TV right now". Whatever possessed me to say that?

Yes, it hurt. It hit me pretty hard, I had an instant red mark the same size as the ball that was planted safely in my lap. I'm going to have a dark black bruise the size of, well, a baseball. There was a crowd of 28,576 at today's game... what do you think of those odds?

When I first saw the photo I thought "You Lucky Girl" you caught the ball, but I guess not, it caught you. I hope you're okay. Yikes!

Poor Saucy. Hope you get to ice it up and it feels better soon.

(And really: the odds of it happening as you are talking about it are nil I would imagine. Good on you and your good mama skills, getting loopy out of the way.)

Ouch. I'm always afraid that'll happen. Ice, Ice, Ice.

Hope it heals soon. Sounds like you are having an exciting vacation!

OMG! Wow! I'm glad you are alright and I hope everything heals up nicely. You are going to have a very ugly bruise. Did you stay after and get the guy to sign it?

I've never caught a baseball in my ribs. I've caught many others, mostly in the mouth and head but they were virtually exclusively during childhood ball games and practices and never going that speed. OUCH! And not a tear. Bravo! Hope you waved to the camera and said "hi Mom"!

At least you got a good story about it. All my bruises have fairly unremarkable background stories. Hope the rest of your vacation is more uneventful.

OMG! You're lucky it only hit your rib! But, ouch! And, yes, how embarrassing! I would have hated the TV part as I probably would have had tears in my eyes! Glad you have the ball as a keepsake, at least. Ouch, again.

I can't believe that! You are so lucky it didn't hit you in the face or head.

At least you can cover it up (?). That would be crazy luck to have that discussion right before the ball flies into your chest.

OMG Saucy!! I can't believed you are just getting a bruise! Not that it didn't hurt, but dang! You could've had a concusion.

I hope you have the ball. It's the least they could do. Yikes!

Happy Canada Day! Hope you are enjoying your vacation, your bruise is healing, and you are getting lots of rest.

How did the Open House go?

Oh my freaking heck!!!!
I watch baseball with my hubbie all the time and I'm constantly saying, "What type of moron doesn't pay attention to the game and ends up getting hit with the ball??!!!!"
Well, I now stand corrected. Smart, witty, "saucy" people can even get hit by a fly ball or pop-up so CLEARLY I will have to put an end to my senseless remarks during Cubs games!
I hope you are feeling okay, my dear!!
p.s okay, I would totally say the same exact thing you did!
"OMG, you know this is all on tv, as we speak!!?? How's my hair?"

Awesome! I am sorry about your ribcage though. Was the batter cute? Did he offer to kiss your boo-boo?
