grab bag

Lots of silly things to share with you today. Like first of all, I made two batches of puffed wheat cake this morning. As a self-proclaimed Martha devotee who can bake all sorts of things from scratch, I cannot, for the life of me, master the simple puffed wheat cake. Achieving a soft, chewy texture while maintaining its shape eludes me. Maybe the idea of a cake made of cereal disgusts you. The idea of never mastering such a simple concoction horrifies me. The first batch was too light, even following the recipe there wasn't nearly enough of a sticky-stuff-to-cereal ratio to make the final squares appealing.

If anyone has any hints on making a delicious puffed wheat square, please advise. I like mine dark, with lots of cocoa. I'd say just whip up a batch and send it to me, but I have this thing about not eating things other people have made, just another strange weird fact about me. Restaurants are fine, but I avoid bake sales like the plague. I'm like a baking-bigot, some sort of anti-home cooking person, unless I know the person who baked it, have been in their kitchen and seen with my own eyes that it is substantially clean and then I will consume freely. Of course I will eat whatever The Fan makes, my Granny, my sister-in-law Susan, my cousin Kelly, MJ, Pepper and a few others. Otherwise, sorry. It's getting crumpled up in the napkin while you're looking the other way if I don't know you that well.
I'm scouring for a little dress for Loopy to wear to our cousin's "Twist of Lime" theme wedding in July. Then I had an a-ha! moment and decided to get something from Lilly Pulitzer. It might be a snap to find something Lilly at Winners or Marshalls for her but in the meantime, I found these two sassy numbers that just scream "Palm Beach" for myself. Without sleeves... with sleeves. Both.
I might need something for the night before the wedding, don't you think? Lime shoes and a clutch, of course.

Veto told me over the weekend that if we do very well on the sale of the property we are flipping in July then he will take me to Yankee Stadium this summer before they close it. Pray for me. House prices are rising where we live at a scandalous rate. I have trouble falling asleep at night because of all the things I want to fix up in that place.

Lastly, a word of advice: stay away from Drillbit Taylor. It was the only movie we managed to see on the weekend and I was expecting something more like Wedding Crashers, but with less Vince Vaughn. Apparently, you need a whole lot of Vince Vaughn (the latest addition to my celebrity crush list) to make a movie that funny. I'd like to agree that "you get what you pay for" but we paid full admission price to see this movie and I wouldn't have watched the whole thing if it were on network television.

No cupcakes. And you know how I love to give out cupcakes.

I've heard the rumors about the movie, so thanks. I've never heard of puffed wheat cake. The only time I use cereal to bake is in rice krispie bars and chex mix. Boring old me;)

Both dresses are perfect for the wedding's theme. You could wear one for the event the night before and the other for the actual wedding.

I'll think good thoughts about your house flip and making it to Yankee Stadium this summer.

Thanks for the "no cupcakes" pronouncement about the movie. I'll skip that viewing.

I've never made puffed wheat cake but I have a similar problem with Rice Krispie cake. Who would have thought that old standby would perplex me. The only way I can make Rice Krispie cake is in the microwave, not on a stove.

I'm still perplexed about your fascination with baseball but I'm still hoping you'll get to that stadium before it closes! I understand ambiance and history!

hm.. I'm wondering if altitude has anything to do with your cake issue? probably not, who knows..
Cute dresses! If I were nearby I could whip something up for Loopy in a heartbeat, both of those dresses would be quick to make, of course I'd need something chocolate first! ;)
and.. thanks for the heads up on the movie.. I'll avoid wasting my money. I hope you are having a great week :)

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who is challenged when it comes to puffed wheat squares. I must admit I am jealous when I eat a chewy perfectly made square.
