i heart my contractor

It seems like Club Little House ignites not only the family's creative sparks, but it also renews our interest in our own little house. A work in progress for years, it has been sitting idle for far too long. My Dad, the consummate contractor, after patiently helping me with the ironing boards for Club Little House, got to work on some major renos of my dollhouse.

And my poor mother - look at the state of her kitchen table for the last few weeks. So patient she is. These are the contractor's tools for installing the last of the miniature lights, putting up walls and adjusting the kitchen pieces I bought in Orlando so they can be installed soon...

My poor Dad said it was harder to wallboard and paper this little house, harder than a real house. I don't know, I've renovated a few crooked houses in my day! But here you can see the master suite. The ceiling fan really turns, did I ever tell you that? The larger light on the ceiling is a halogen bulb for "task lighting" so we can easily see what we are doing or if we want to show things off for a better look. Dad is carving the crown moulding and baseboard himself. It is hideously time-consuming for him when I am sure there are more exciting things for him to do. I can't wait to move the little house from Mom and Dad's to our newly renovated home... hmmmm.... a newly renovated old house inside a newly renovated old house?

And since I never did post the photos of the Club Little House packages, here they are: they are embellished with thimbles, safety pins and tiny pairs of scissors.

And inside sit the pretty ironing boards! I hope they travel well. I also added quite a bit of shredded tissue to keep them stable. If you get one of these yellow wrapped parcels, lift the tissue sheets surrounding the shredded tissue up first, then unfold it all to reveal your gift.

That's it. I'm getting my house back out! I think I stopped, though, because I had more fun picking out furniture and things...I need a family who'll help out with the boring parts (at least the parts I find boring anyway).

And I picked up that book - I haven't started reading it yet but I did read some reviews and I can certainly see why you suggested it. I'm really looking forward to looking into it over lunch today....

Your dad looks exactly as a master craftsman should look. Your little house is gorgeous. Now I wanna see the rest of it. I think you'll be needing to set up a flickr or something like that with regular "work-in-progress" pictures so we can see how everything is going.

Every time I read about your family working on your dollhouse, it makes me so happy and also a bit sad. Happy because I love it that it's a family thing you all do together. A bit sad because my parents built my beach dollhouse for me but they both died in 2004--today is the anniversary of my mother's death and my dad's is on Aug. 9. So, it's quite life-affirming for me to read about another family's loving work together. Thank you so much, I really needed this reminder today--it helps so much. (Sorry I'm a bit maudlin today about it all.)

My mom had this cool old dollhouse that she never fully finished. My daughter LOVED to play w/it when we'd visit. (She lives in another state.)
I wanted to get my dd her own dollhouse for christmas and I remembered that my mom has a lot of duplicate furniture so I called her. She told me that she had JUST given the doll house to the goodwill last month but she kept the furniture which she's going to give all to me. HOW COULD SHE JUST GIVE YOUR DOLLHOUSE AWAY W/OUT ASKING IF I WANTED IT?!? Oh well. Love those CUTE packages you put together!!

Now I feel so much better about my kitchen table! LOL! I have been crafting on it for a couple of weeks now, and it looks very similar.
Your mom and dad are wonderful.
I love the presentation, as well as the gift.
Thanks for being such a great blog pal. It means more than I can say.

Wow! I love the picture of your dad's work table. I enlarged it and it was just like an "I Spy" book!!! I love what I think is a mini Hot-Air Balloon.

All the precise tools, tiny batteries, gobs of dried glue...just too much fun!
